Maruyama Develops Engine Using Hydrogen

Maruyama US, Inc. (MUS) in conjunction with parent company Maruyama Manufacturing Company, Inc., Ltd. (MMC) have announced the successful stable operation of the world’s first 2-stroke single cylinder hydrogen powered engine.

Bench testing is being performed in Japan utilizing a current mass-production Maruyama 80 cc gasoline engine that is capable of all operating angle positions and high-speed operation of over 8,000 RPM.

To achieve all angle operation a new process for lubricating internal engine components had to be introduced; currently the engine is being supplied hydrogen externally, via fuel injection. In the future Maruyama will adopt a cassette cylinder system and make parts smaller to be able to utilize this technology for mobile operations.

As time progresses power equipment prototypes will be developed and explored utilizing hydrogen to achieve environmental conservation and workability for professional and industrial use. With most power equipment manufacturers focusing on electrification of equipment, a decision was made by the Maruyama engineering team to focus on the future. Japan will continue the development and testing of its hydrogen technology aiming for carbon-neutrality.
